Swante Pääbo
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2022 was awarded to Svante Pääbo “for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution”. Svante Pääbo has been been director of the Department of Evolutionary Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.
Swante Pääbo’s research engendered a completely new scientific discipline; paleogenomics. He discovered the genetic differences that distinguishes all living humans from extinct hominins. The discoveries made by him form the foundation for delving into the distinctive characteristics that make us human.
A compelling summary of the work of Swante Pääbo has been published in a press release Nobel Prize Committee of 03.10.2022.
In 2017, a film team of Imagining Science/ HSLU developed a film portrait of Svante Pääbo in commission of Nomis Foundation connected to the Nomis Distinguished Scientist Award 2017.
